So while my cousin and I were working out last night, we turned on Lost. I love this show. Remember Ben? The leader of the "Others?" Well, his stitches are infected and he needs a doctor...again. Who's the only competent doctor available? Why good old Jack, of course. I love how this big shot is dependent on someone who despises him. And yet, Jack is always trying to fix something or someone. He just can't refuse, because that's the kind of person he is. That's what I like about him, that even though his meddling in other peoples' affairs usually gets him in some kind of trouble, he still wants to help. He really cares about people.
This episode was about how Jack needs to take care of Ben and the only way he's going to do that, is if Juliete (another of the Others that helped Kate and Sawyer get off the island) is set free and will not be executed. It also went to his story in the past. He was vacationing in some tropical place, and he meets a woman, Achara. They get together, hang out, sleep together, the whole enchilada. Well, one night he decides to follow her to work...don't ask my why, for I have no idea either. Well, she leads him to what looks like a tattoo parlor. He goes inside and she's not happy to see him. When he asks what this place is, she says her work is NOT decoration (she was quite adamant about that). She said she can see who people really are, and she marks them. We're just meeting people with all sorts of crazy abilities. Anyway, Jack asks her to tell him who he is, and she gets really upset and doesn't want to tell him. Finally, she succumbs to his forceful questioning and tells him that he is a born leader and a great man. However, because of this, he is a loner and that makes him frightened and angry. It must have been right on by the look on his face and I thought it was true too. Then he wanted the mark for it, and she told him there will be consequences, and he replies that there always are. His mark, which looked extremely painful to put on (it looked like it was a chip and block sort of manner), said "He walks among us, but is not one of us." Jack says later to one of the others that can read that language, that that is what it says, but not what it means.
Hopefully, what he thinks it means can be cleared up in a later episode. I also thought it curious that on the island he had another part to his marking above the message that he didn't have when Achara marked him on his vacation. It will be interesting to see his story progress. Also, I can't wait to see what happens with Kate and Sawyer, because while they were prisoners, Kate slept with him, because she thought they were going to die, and now she feels guilty about it, especially after leaving Jack behind. They've had a love triangle going on for some time now, but Kate seems to be more leaning towards Sawyer lately, but she just can't seem to let Jack go. There always has to be a love triangle in a drama. If there wasn't, it just wouldn't be the same.

Lost
So Lost last night was pretty disappointing. (Yeah, I'm just now getting to a computer...) I thought the episode coming up next week was going to be last night's. I mean, it wasn't bad or anything, but it wasn't the best I've seen. It was all about Desmond and what happened to him in the hatch. There was a bit about Charlie, but mostly just Desmond.
Anyway, when the hatch blew up, Desmond was sent back in time or something to when he was with his girlfriend, Penny. Well, he thinks he's going crazy, because he keeps getting deja vu and keeps getting flash backs about the island and the hatch where he has to press the button. Near the end, he decides he's going to propose to Penny and goes to the jewelers. The saleswoman gets out the "perfect" ring and he says he'll take it. The crazy lady tells him no, that he has to have second thoughts and leave the store. Now if that had been me, I probably would have left, but gone to a different store. He can't figure out why she won't sell it to him until she says a bunch of stuff about the future like he's going to break Penny's heart, enter a boat contest (because Penny's father said he wasn't good enough for her, so he wants to prove him wrong), get shipwrecked, and find the hatch. It was really weird. Anyways, he winds up telling Penny he can't be with her anymore and he falls and is "taken back" to the island. Now he has some psychic ability and you find out he's been helping Charlie, because he's going to die...Yeah, so wasn't expecting that one. I've gone back and forth about liking Charlie. Sometimes I really like him, but other times he really frustrates me, but still, I'd rather he not die.
Like I said, it wasn't that great an episode and next week's looks much more promising. I like it more when they have a few characters' stories going at once, because they can leave it at a cliffhanger, but still get back to it in the same episode.

First Essay
When I heard this essay was going to be an "adobiography," I was, at first, intruiged and then it kind of faded. I think I'm just sick of all the ads out there telling me how to live my life. Plus, the fact that I get bored very easily probably didn't help any. Ads are tedious too. However, it was an interesting take for an essay and I had never done anything like this before, so that made it better.
I always have problems with word flow. I always have too much to say, but I just can't say it right. I guess it was a bit hard to find ads that really spoke to me and stood out as well. I also felt rushed when we had the peer conference day. It was hard to read both essays, correct them, write comments about the essay, and try to talk about it. My group didn't get around to talking much, but they had some good comments and corrections. But, all in all, I think this essay was fairly easy and we had plenty of time to work on it and get it right.

LOST
Yay, I got to watch Lost last night! That show is amazing. You know, if you don't watch the show from the beginning you're just that: Lost. I think that's kind of ironic. Anyways, this was the season premiere of the fourth season, but I found out that it's kind of still the third season, because the third season was only like eight episodes. Lost? Yeah, everyone pretty much is with this show, but you can't help but get involved with it. Well, unless you've never watched and it and don't really care...
Anywho, the episode started off with a bang. Jack tells Kate and Sawyer to find a way to get back to their friends. He's doing surgery on the Other's leader, Ben, but he made a slit in his kidney that will kill him in exactly one hour unless his friends get away safely. The Others are the bad guys that keep capturing people from "Jack's clan." Four seasons later, it's finally explained why they did so: so Jack, who is a spinal doctor, could remove a tumor from Ben's spine. Yeah, so basically, it goes back and forth from Kate and Sawyer escaping, to being found again, to being let go. I can't even explain anything really, because I'd have to start from the very first episode, that's how crazy this show is. You have to keep up or it's just too confusing. Well, at the end of the show, Kate and Sawyer get help from this girl who turns out to be Ben's daughter (dun dun dun). She gives them her boat and Jack makes Kate promise she won't come back for him. So they sail to the other island and Jack is left behind.
You know, the first time I watched this show, I didn't get into it, because it wasn't the first episode, so I just have to say to anyone who reads this, if you haven't, watch the first couple of episodes and I'm sure it will strike your fancy in some way.

Reading and Writing About Images
I really liked this essay, and not just because it was short with lots of pictures (I'm a total picaholic), but because of how true it was. A picture really does speak a thousand words. The essay was right, though, in that most people usually don't look twice at a picture to give it some good, hard thought. It made me laugh when it said, "we urge you to analyze all images," because it's pretty sad when we need to be told to look deeper at things.
The essay gave some pairs of pictures to analyze and compare. My two favorite were John Wayne next to Jackie Chan and the arquitectural comparisons. When I think of John Wane, three words come to mind: cool, calm, and collected. He's a very confident individual, or at least in the movies. He was a true cowboy and boy, could he use that gun of his. When I think of Jackie Chan, I think of comedy, and I'm ready to have a good laugh. He just looks absurd in a cowboy hat, pretending to hold a gun. It just tops it off that he has a huge goofy grin on his face, holding up his award.
When I saw the columns the first thing I noticed was, of course, how they differed in looks. The bottom one triumphs hands down with it's beauty. It's very modern and very clean, while the other is shabby and run down. However, the essay asks us to look past first impressions and really give it some second thought. Now I love arquitecture, so looking at the top colums again, I can't help but respect the people back then for building this amazing place that's held together quite nicely for how old it looks. It stands just fine on it's own. That run down place represents culture and history. The bottom one, to me, represents how far we've come. Also, that we recreate things out of respect for the things that used to look like how it looks now.
I thought all the comparisons told a story and it was pretty cool looking more in depth at them, but those were my favorites.

Paradise Lost
I watched the King of Queens this time around and I have to say, I could easily get addicted to this show. Doug and Carrie Heffernan are ridiculously funny together. They're so mean to each other sometimes, but in the end, it always works out. It's like no matter how mad at each other they are or how much they have to go through, they can make it work. They just make it more amusing with sarcasm and spite.
So tonight's episode was about how Doug surprised Carrie with a trip to a cute little hotel for a weekend getaway. It was going to be the most romantic and relaxing trip ever. Or so they thought. They get to the hotel and the first thing you notice are a bunch of cats all over the place. Then the hotel owner comes out and she is an older woman. Now I don't know about you, but an old big house with a little old lady and a bunch of cats just screams cheesy horror flick to me...Anyways, they sign in and go up to their room, which is very cozy and snug. They open the bathroom and low and behold, there is an old man washing in the tub. The owner comes in and starts yelling at the man who turns out to be her husband. Alright, right then and there I would have left the place, seriously, that is so wrong. But they decide to stick it out. So they go down to dinner and find out they are the only ones at the hotel because of a bigger hotel over yonder came into business, one with a spa and suites. Later that night, Carrie gets Doug to pack up their stuff and try to sneak out. Well, one of the cats had grown attached to Doug and followed them. When the owners came looking for the cat, Doug and Carrie made a run for it. Doug fell in a ditch thing and Carrie just kept on going, leaving him there. So Doug grabs the cat to make it look like he had found it. So he has to go back with the creepy couple and it jumps to a scene of Carrie dancing with a couple of guys at a club at the hotel with a nice drink in her hand. Yeah, it was funny, but at the same time, I was getting irritated. I mean, who seriously ditches the love of their life just so they could be in a fancier place. That just made her out to be a total you know what. The next day she comes back in her club get up and wants him to come to the hotel. Doug said no, that he was going to stick it out at the old hotel. I respected that, because he planned this weekend to be perfect for the woman he loved and it seemed like it wasn't good enough. Well, of course they work it out and everyone's happy again. I don't know, if that had been me, I would be pissed for awhile and would seriously consider marriage counseling to get some priorities straight.
