I love movies, I love the special effects and I love the emotions that they evoke, and I always think I watch alot of them. But then when my friends and even the class gets to talking about certain ones, I find myself clueless, not even recognizing the name. I guess that goes to show that I need to get out there, expand my horizon, and watch some good old movies. And I'm not talking about new releases. One of the essays was telling us to get an old classic or much better would be a movie not made in American. The author was saying how he watched an Iraqi movie (I believe) with a bunch of children and they loved the movie. He said if children could enjoy a movie like that, why can't adults?
The essays were also telling us to not just simply watch the movie, but have a reaction to it. Ask yourself questions about the scenes, how the lighting and music play roles in how we view the movie. Ask how the special effects affected your initial response. They also told us to watch the movies over again, and if need be, pause and rewind a few times to try and better understand what you are watching. I never really thought about watching a movie like that. I mean, I like to ask questions and think deeper about things, that's why I like movies like The Butterfly Effect and the Skeleton Key.

A really good place to start if you want to watch "old" films would be to look over some of Hitchcock's work. He did some really exciting, innovative work that a lot of directors today make references to in their films. There's a film called Disturbia coming out soon (which looks like it's probably going to be terrible) that almost totally rips off Hitchcock's Rear Window.
Start with Psycho. When it was released in 1960, it was the first film ever released that you couldn't go into once it had already started. This totally changed what it meant to see a film. So see Psycho, then see The Birds, then see Marnie. The films are all very different, but traces of what happens in the films can be seen in todays movies.
Yeah, everyone's told me to see Psycho, I just haven't gotten around to it, I have seen The Birds, that was a really good movie and it made me wary of birds for awhile.
